His name is woven into her heart, and the sound of his name is carried by the wind through the night, calling, „Where are you?“ Then he comes, through the gardens of time, through the dew of the morning, and he recognizes her: „She is the one.“ „My soul knows yours.“ He chooses her.
„Set me as a seal upon your heart“—this famous line appears in chapter 8. It expresses a profound and passionate love, a devotion sealed by a covenant of hearts.
Its strength is „as strong as death.“ It is irresistible—a gift from God. Physical love and erotic desire are also part of God’s good creation and are meant to be embraced within His design. Longing and passion are among the deepest of human experiences.
No flood can drown this love, and no wind can extinguish its flame. God is the giver of love, and as its Creator He watches over it when two people willingly entrust themselves to one another.
Solomon was certainly no stranger to pleasure. He celebrated physical love and erotic desire, both of which have their rightful place in God’s creation. Yet Solomon eventually crossed the line. He could never have enough and amassed an enormous harem of seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines. Faithfulness was not his greatest strength. He took whatever he desired. That was never God’s intention: one man and one woman—not one man with countless women.
In the end, Solomon’s many marriages became his downfall, for they also led him to worship many gods. He turned away from the true faith, and his kingdom ultimately declined.
Remaining faithful to the one true and living God brings blessing. That is why the text concludes with this prayer and promise:
God, we want to belong completely to one another. We pledge ourselves to each other, but our promise will endure only if You, Lord, unite our hearts. We need You. We are not in control. Therefore, grant us Your blessing—Your favor, Your smile, Your protection, and Your guidance—in every word we speak and in everything we do.
Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned.
