Psalm 59 – Powerful and Vigorous

Psalm 59 – Powerful and Vigorous

God’s Truth Sets Us Free—It Doesn’t Bind or Paralyze Us For years, I stayed away from Facebook. I simply didn’t have the time—our caregiving situation demanded everything I had. Recently, out of curiosity, I followed a sudden impulse and opened the app on my phone.

Psalm 8 – I Stand in Awe

Psalm 8 – I Stand in Awe

Wow.

  • When was the last time you responded with the curiosity of a child?
  • With wonder?
  • With genuine amazement?
  • When was the last time you simply stood in awe?

Wonder makes you pause. For a brief moment, you catch your breath and see something—or someone—with completely new eyes. Unexpected. Extraordinary. Beautiful.

Wonder is the starting point of discovery. When we are amazed, we want to know more. We begin to ask questions, reflect, understand, and apply what we’ve learned. Philosophers like Aristotle and Plato described wonder as the driving force behind learning. It’s what inspires explorers, scientists, artists, and poets alike.

Wonder pulls us out of the routine of everyday life. It’s deeply connected to joy. In fact, research suggests that experiencing awe doesn’t just make us happier—it also makes us more compassionate, generous, and considerate toward others.

So what are you waiting for? Take a deep breath. Hit the reset button. Slow down. Let yourself be amazed. Be fully present in the here and now, and discover the breathtaking complexity and beauty of creation.

Photography has become one of my favorite ways to do that. Looking through a camera lens helps you notice things you’ve never really seen before. My husband is always out exploring, searching for new perspectives. I often join him, and more often than not, I find myself filled with wonder. Every single time, I’m reminded how good it is for my soul.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honour. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet. Psalm 8: 3-6 (NIV)

Being present in the moment—a practice that’s often associated today with mindfulness and Buddhism—was also part of life in biblical times. People in the Old Testament lived in close relationship with the natural world. Animals and plants revealed God’s wisdom. They watched the path of the sun, studied the stars, and depended on God’s provision through the weather.

They were shepherds, fig growers, vineyard keepers, and grain farmers. Abraham gazed in wonder at the countless stars in the night sky. The book of Kings tells us that Solomon wrote about the vast world of plants and animals.

Jesus loved nature, too. Again and again, He used it as His classroom: the vine and the branches, wheat and weeds, the mustard seed, sand and rock, birds and lilies—and so many other images drawn from creation.

In Psalm 8, David gives words to his own sense of awe. This psalm has been part of my life for many years. When I was a child, one of my teachers had me memorize part of it. Looking back, I think she wanted me to see two things: the breathtaking beauty of creation and my immeasurable worth in God’s eyes—not my insignificance.

„Ich staune“ Please, take a few quiet minutes, read Psalm 8 slowly, and simply let its words sink in.

Wow! Unerwartet. Ungewöhnlich.
