Psalm 59 – Powerful and Vigorous

God’s Truth Sets Us Free—It Doesn’t Bind or Paralyze Us

For years, I stayed away from Facebook. I simply didn’t have the time—our caregiving situation demanded everything I had.

Recently, out of curiosity, I followed a sudden impulse and opened the app on my phone. At first, it was interesting to see posts from people I used to know. There was an empty place inside me that wanted to be filled, and I absorbed it all.

Before long, though, other kinds of posts started appearing in my feed. Again and again, I opened the app as though I were stepping through a door into another world. That world became increasingly negative, burdened with problems, and often manipulative. There was very little focus on solutions.

A heaviness slowly settled over me. The content on Facebook dragged me down more and more until it began to paralyze me inwardly. It started shaping my thinking and even altering my emotions. I lost my confidence and hope. Faced with the endless stream of problems, I felt helpless. I became more pessimistic, more frustrated, and angrier.

It’s already challenging enough to respond constructively to the problems in our own lives and communities. But now the problems of the entire world were crashing down on me. A deep sense of powerlessness took hold. The flood of human need rolled over me and swallowed me whole.

Facebook kept drawing me back, yet its content poisoned my mood and my days. My joy for life began to shrink. In the end, I felt full and yet completely empty. My energy was being drained because I had forgotten to reconnect to my true source of strength.
Instead of spending time with God and His Word—which had always renewed and strengthened me—I spent my time scrolling through Facebook.

But the „facts“ presented there are not the same as God’s truth. God’s truth sets us free. It doesn’t bind us. It doesn’t paralyze us.

On Facebook we are constantly confronted with the failures, limitations, and wrongdoing of people and organizations. Sometimes the information is factual, but often it is highly emotional, presented as absolute truth, or even completely false.

It creates an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. What can we really do? And even if we can do something, won’t it cost us everything? Will we succeed? Will it even make a difference? I became discouraged.

Little by little, it began working through me like yeast, affecting every part of my thinking. I had completely forgotten that I know the Creator of the universe—the One whose works are mighty and powerful. I had forgotten that He is able and willing to act for me and for everyone else. No one has to face the injustice of this world alone. No one has to walk through crises and hardships by themselves. When we don’t have the answers, we can turn to Him and receive His wisdom, guidance, and help.

I had been drinking from the wrong source. It wasn’t a spring of living water. Its waters had become contaminated, filled with fermenting influences that slowly make us spiritually sick.

„But I will sing about your strength; every morning I will sing aloud of your constant love.“ Psalm 59:16 (GNT)

As I read those words today, I remembered the song we released a few weeks ago. I sang the chorus twice. And what can I say? I felt free again. My soul was connected once more.

You are mighty; You act with power. Splendid and glorious are You. Your strength and Your works are beyond comparison, beyond description. Above all things, You are God.
It did me so much good to remember who He is. Maybe take a moment to listen to the song yourself.

“ But I will sing about your strength; every morning I will sing aloud of your constant love. You have been a refuge for me, a shelter in my time of trouble. I will praise you, my defender. My refuge is God, the God who loves me.“
Psalm 59:16+17 (GNT)
